WE SPOKE TO TOM ABOUT HIS TRIATHLON JOURNEY:
My triathlon journey hasn’t followed the standard journey into the sport, I was a fairly late comer to triathlon. I've played sports since as long as I can remember. Initially I was a runner when I was around 10 years old, beforeI I discovered swimming and Water polo at school, which would shape the next years of my life. Throughout my teenage years, I fully immersed myself into playing water polo, and was part of the GB junior team for a good number of years, from my early teens right up until my first year of uni. It was there that things met a crossroads and I had to make a decision - I had reached a point with my polo that it wasn't going to reach much further, so I started looking for a new challenge.
In the summer of 2014 I did my first Olympic distance triathlon, - ‘the big east’ and from there I was hooked. A couple of months later, I won my first race at the Leeds Castle triathlon in Kent, and I was lucky that the organizer there was an ex-pro triathlete, and took me under his wing with some guidance and coaching for the rest of that summer. I was lucky at that time to be based at Loughborough University, and fortunately managed to make it onto the high performance squad, where I spent the next 4 years training alongside some of the best athletes in the country - and racing the ITU style Olympic and sprint draft legal races, all whilst completing my degree in sport and exercise science.
I always knew my future lay in long distance racing however and when i finally came across to the world of Ironman, I instantly saw the results come.
