Cadence
Monitoring your cadence can help you spot trends that relate to good performances or to keep an eye on niggling injuries.
What is cadence?
Cadence is the frequency or rate of steps per minute. Some single-sided footpods, sports watches or fitness trackers measure it as the number of times one foot hits the ground in one minute. Using the INCUS | NOVA we can measure both sides and find the true average.
Why does cadence matter?
Cadence is very individual but in general a cadence that is too low can indicate over-striding which could increase your chance of injury due to higher impact forces. A cadence that is too high can be inefficient.
How does INCUS measure cadence ?
Using the centrally positioned INCUS | NOVA we are able to record each stride on the left and right leg to give an accurate cadence.
Monitoring your progress
Knowing your cadence is another piece of the jigsaw that gives a 360-degree understanding of your performance. Monitoring your cadence can help you spot trends that relate to good performances or to keep an eye on niggling injuries.
Run Power
A single, consistent metric to compare performance across different runs allowing you to understand the true effort behind the session.
What is Run Power?
Run Power is a measure of your running effort and efficiency, which unlike Pace is not influenced by any other factor such as hills, headwind or rough terrain .
Why does Run Power matter?
Run Power provides a single, consistent metric to compare performance across different runs. For example, running up a hill or into a headwind requires more energy (to produce a given speed) in comparison to a flat, still run. Run Power describes this effort in a way other metrics can’t.
How does INCUS measure Run Power ?
Run Power is measured in Watts (W), one Watt is equal to one Joule of work per second and power is the rate of energy expended. Run Power is measured in Watts (W), which is the rate of energy used per second. When running, this is the mechanical energy used to push you forward. The higher the Power, the more energy used per second. The typical range for Run Power in endurance distance runners is 250W-350W.
Monitoring Run Power
Observing how your Run Power changes alongside other measures such as elevation or cadence can help to identify where you are strong and where to improve. Using Average Power in the session summary allows you to quickly compare effort across different sessions. This is a really useful way of checking that your weekly training is balanced and you are providing the right dose of training stress to your body to improve without becoming over-trained.
Take- Off and Landing
Changes in Take Off and Landing in a session can indicate when your form begins to degrade as you tire. Rapid or unusual changes can indicate increased risk of injury.
What is Take-Off and Landing?
Take off & Landing are measures of acceleration at the toe off and deceleration at the foot strike phases of your stride.
Why does Take-Off and Landing matter?
Both are related to a number of factors including leg stiffness. Which correlates to Running Economy. Excessive landing deceleration is one of the biggest causes of running injuries. INCUS can help show INCUS Run users the level of their landing deceleration on left and right legs and advise on how to lower this through Pro Tips.
Monitoring your progress
Look at your Take Off & Landing values over time. Increased values for a given type of session could be a sign of increased injury risk. Observe how symmetrical your Take Off & Landing values are between your left and right foot. Use it alongside Pace to identify how your run form is affected by certain target paces, or how trends may correlate with niggles or injury.
Stride Phases
Keep an eye on your Stride Phase to monitor your progress toward greater running efficiency.
What is Stride Phase
Stride Phases shows you total stride time and how much of your stride is spent in contact with the ground and in flight.
Why does Stride Phase matter?
Looking at your Stride Phase values is an interesting way of comparing your run form at different speeds or at different points in your run as you fatigue. It can be helpful when looked at alongside Pace and Take Off & Landing to identify how your run form is affected by certain target paces, or how trends may correlate with niggles or injury.
How does INCUS measure Stride Phase?
Total Stride Time is the Ground Contact Time plus Flight Time. Ground Contact Time is the time between landing and toe-off on the same foot and Flight Time is the time between toe-off and landing on the subsequent step.
Monitoring your progress
Achieving a lower Ground Contact Time and higher Flight Time at a given pace indicates a more efficient running technique. Keeping an eye on your Stride Phases when trying to reduce Ground Contact Time will help you to see how you are improving.
Pacing and Splits
Accurate recording of your Pace and Splits allows you to see how you have performed and compare training sessions.
What is Pacing and Splits?
Pace and Splits are fundamental measurements to assess swim performance. They directly relate to your total swim time for a certain distance.
Why does Pacing and Splits matter?
Whether you are completing a session based on a training plan or in a race environment, accurate recording of your Pace and Splits allows you to see how you have performed. By recording your Pacing and Splits you can check you completed the session as planned and compare future sessions.
How does INCUS measure Pacing and Splits ?
Pace is how fast you are swimming, measured in the equivalent time to swim 100m. The split time is the time per length. This can vary depending on the pool size you’re swimming in. Your INCUS | NOVA will automatically record your splits as it knows when you are stationary and when you are moving, so you can clearly and accurately see a breakdown of your swim session without the need for wet-notes or estimated speeds and distances.
Monitoring your progress
Pacing and Splits allows you to record and compare different training sessions and races so you can monitor your performance and see how much faster you are swimming.
Swim Economy
It’s not always just about getting faster, use Swim Economy to track the effectiveness of your technique training.
What is Swim Economy?
In swimming, forces act to push you forward (your strokes) and slow you down (drag). Swim Economy is a measure of efficiency that shows the ratio of these propulsive to resistive accelerations.
Why does Swim Economy matter?
The fastest swimmers combine a high stroke rate with high Swim Economy per stroke. The closer you are to 100% Swim Economy for a certain pace the more efficient your stroke is.
How does INCUS measure Swim Economy ?
By measuring your acceleration, we are able to display the ratio of speed gained (shown as light blue bars above zero in the CLOUD | APP ) during a stroke and the speed lost (shown as dark blue bars below zero) during a stroke. As this is a ratio, the units are given as a percentage.
Monitoring your progress Swim Economy?
Swim Economy can be useful to show improvements in your technique that don’t rely on you swimming a fast time. If your swim economy increases for a given swim speed, your movement through the water is more efficient. You can use Swim Economy to compare sessions when making technical changes (e.g. stroke rotation, or catch) to quantify which aspects of your technique impact your form or efficiency most.
Stroke Rate
One part of the equation for faster swimming. Either improve your stroke rate or distance travelled, or both.
What is Stroke Rate
Stroke Rate is the number of strokes you perform per minute.
Why does Stroke Rate matter?
Stroke Rate is a fundamental swimming metric that relates to swim speed. Your swimming speed is your Stroke Rate multiplied by distance per stroke.
How does INCUS measure Stroke Rate?
Using the centrally placed INCUS | NOVA on your upper spine we are able to record the movement of the left and right arm independently giving a true, not estimated, stroke rate.
Monitoring your progress
To swim faster you have to increase either the distance travelled per stroke, or the rate of your strokes per minute, or both. Watching how technique and fitness training influences your swim stroke, and its impact on your swim speed or Pace, is an invaluable way to track your progress toward becoming a faster swimmer.
Body Roll
Roll is the maximum rotation of your shoulders left to right throughout your stroke cycle, relative to the surface of the water.
Why does Body Roll matter?
How much you rotate in the water is related to stroke efficiency, your frontal area and drag. It is also a way of assessing your body position and your stroke biomechanics.
How does INCUS measure Body Roll ?
The INCUS | NOVA is the only swim tracker to measure Body Roll and it does this by monitoring the movement and rotation of your body from its central position on your upper spine.
Monitoring your progress
The recommended Body Roll angle is between 40°-70° so keeping an eye on whether you stay within these parameters in every session can help you better understand your form and technique. When you are working on individual aspects of your technique you can check how that is affecting your Body Roll. Watching your body roll can be very useful if you are tracking your rehabilitation from an injury or working on shoulder mobility.
Body Pitch
64% of INCUS users new to swimming needed to improve their Body Pitch. After using INCUS | NOVA they saw an average 20% increase in Swim Economy.
What is Body Pitch?
Pitch is how flat you are in the water from head to toe, it shows when your hips and legs are dropping.
Why does Body Pitch matter?
The more of your body that is in the water, the more drag you create at a certain swim speed. Body Pitch directly relates to drag, the higher value the more drag your body is creating. If your body is creating drag the more forward propulsion you will have to create to overcome its resistive force.
How does INCUS measure Body Pitch?
The INCUS | NOVA is the only swim tracker to measure Body Pitch and it does this by monitoring the movement of your body from its central position on your upper spine. A pitch of 0° means your body is exactly flat to the water. In practice, anything under 20° is good.
Monitoring your progress
To improve your Body Pitch, you need to work on lifting your hips. By monitoring Body Pitch, you can see how effective your drills are and observe whether your swim posture breaks down above a certain Pace or Distance. Sinking legs is a key area of improvement for 64% of INCUS users who are new to swimming (less than 6 - 12 months in the pool). After reducing pitch angle by monitoring using INCUS | NOVA, on average, users saw a 20% increase in Swim Economy.
- Sessions must be longer than 3 minutes for the analytics to process.
- Ensure your GPS-enabled phone or watch is with you if you're going on a run.
- Make sure the NOVA has paired with the CLOUD | APP before going on a run.
- Check your phone settings to make sure location settings are set as always on for INCUS | CLOUD.
- When you turn the device on it's green. When starting a session by pressing the button on the NOVA or within the app the device colour will turn blue. .
